Best Coffee in Coeur d'Alene – Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Best Coffee in Coeur d'Alene – Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

My friend the other day called me a, “Coffee Feen.” I agree and fully embrace the title. I can’t believe that I went 30 years without it in my life. I could have really used it in college. I used to fall asleep in class ALL THE TIME. Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, my hometown, has a very nice coffee scene. It is fairly recent, most of the really good shops only opening up within the last 2-3 years. Coeur d’Alene has changed so much, and now there is really good coffee to be found, which I love!

I’ve rounded up a list of my top 3 favorite coffee shops in Coeur d’Alene, ranked from my favorite to least favorite, for you to try when you visit. Enjoy!

***UPDATED MAY 26TH, 2021

#1 Evans Brothers Coffee Roasters

Evans Brothers is my favorite coffee shop in Coeur d’Alene. They roast their own coffee locally, the staff is friendly, and they take COVID seriously with all employees wearing masks. Evans Brothers started in 2009 by two brothers in Sandpoint, Idaho, Rick and Randy Evans. They strive to create a space where people feel connected to their communities and to the story of the coffee itself. Their organic fair-trade coffee is delicious. Make sure to grab a bag of beans to make at home! I was pleasantly surprised at the professionalism of the baristas. The space is huge with many different seating options. They have tables for people who need a work space as well as couches for people who want to sit and chat with friends. It seems that they strive to make their coffee shop a place for everyone to feel welcome. If you want something to go with your coffee, they also sell delicious sweet and savory hand pies. Bean & Pie, a local pie company, is partnering with Evans Brothers and selling their pie at this coffee shop. I love the huckleberry hand pie! And if you want a more savory pie, try the mac and cheese pie or the breakfast eggs and bacon pie. Yum!

#2 The Coeur d’Alene Coffee Company

The Coeur d’Alene Coffee Company makes delicious coffee in downtown CDA. It’s hard to know what to order here because there are so many great choices. The drinks are always spot on and beautifully presented. They roast their own coffee and the quality is top notch. Their menu is creative, to the point where you can’t decide what to order because everything sounds amazing. But the standout here is their space. This place is huge! You’ll always find a seat or a table to work here. There is a giant movie screen with couches to lounge in and relax. (This space is only open on Saturdays) I love the fireplace that warmly welcomes you when you enter the shop. I could have stayed and relaxed by that fireplace all day. It is beautiful inside, with modern decor. Their outside space is nice to visit in the summertime with lots of tables. If you want a fun summer coffee treat, try one of their affogatos, ice cream with an espresso shot, a new menu item. Sadly, some the baristas here could be much more friendly, welcoming, and helpful. I’ve had some not so pleasant experiences as far as customer service, and none of the employees wear masks which I find to be disappointing.

#3 Vault

There are a lot of things to love about Vault, but my favorite thing is probably the history of the building itself. It was built in 1904 as the Exchange National Bank of Coeur d’Alene and still has the name written on the side – “Exchange Bank.” This building has also been used for other purposes – an ice cream parlor, a pharmacy, a library, and even another coffee shop. Today it is Vault, the most Instagramble coffee shop in CDA. You won’t find better people watching with the location being right on Sherman Ave, the famous CDA downtown street. Vault serves DOMA coffee, a local coffee roaster in Post Falls, Idaho. I’ve enjoyed their honey lavender latte with oat milk. They definitely don’t lack in creativity as their menu is always changing with the seasons. During the winter they serve things like, “The Grinch” a matcha latte, and a “Fireside Mocha” with s’mores flavors. The service is friendly and all the employees wear masks which I appreciate. It is stunning inside (I’d say it wins the award for the most beautiful coffee shop in the area!) and is a fun place to go for that afternoon pick-me-up. New Menu Item- The Coffee Flight! It’s a sampling of five of their different signature ice drinks. It’s a little pricy at $11, but it’s fun to try out once.

Make Sure to Check This Out…

Doma Coffee Roasting Company

Doma is a local coffee roaster in Post Falls, Idaho. They provide coffee beans to several coffee shops in the area, including White Pine and Vault. They have a store front in Post Falls attached to their roasting facility. There aren’t any tables to work or places to sit, so I wouldn’t consider it a coffee shop per se, but it’s the perfect place for a grab-n-go drink. They are full of passion and professionalism and are so fun to talk to about coffee and other foodie topics. The drinks are fabulously crafted with so much detail in every step. They also sell MAK Bread and Seahorse Chocolate, two of my favorite PNW products. Make sure to check them out!

Honorable Mention

Union Roasters

I’ve visited Union Roasters many times and recently, sadly, I’ve been disappointed. Their coffee has tasted burnt, with almost a chemical like aftertaste. They don’t make their own syrups, and overall, I’ve been a little underwhelmed with my drinks. With that being said, I have had good drinks there in the past. And their decor is adorable, very modern and trendy. The owner is also very friendly and kind, as well as the other employees. Sometimes I find myself still going to Union in a pinch because they have a drive-thru (at both locations) which I find really convenient when I’m in a hurry. Besides Starbucks, they are the only decent coffee in the area with a drive-thru.

Other Places I’ve Tried

Calypsos Coffee Roasters

Besides the chill vibe here, I don’t really prefer Calypsos. I think there are better coffee shops in the downtown Coeur d’Alene area, so I spend my time frequenting them instead. Life is too short to drink mediocre coffee.

Terre Coffee and Bakery

This place is deceiving because it looks so cute and trendy from the outside, but I promise you that their coffee isn’t as appealing. Every time I try it I am disappointed. Burnt bean taste, fake tasting syrups, overall very underwhelming. Their saving grace is their drive-thru for when you’re in a pinch and their cinnamon rolls. Yum!

I can’t wait for you to try these coffee shops on your next trip to Coeur d’Alene. I promise you that they are the best that this town has to offer. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Leave me a comment below if you happen to try any of them. I’d love to hear from you!
